App Manager - The Server Category
Before you can use App Manager to configure an App Server you must connect to the required App Server's App Server Configuration Database. When you load App Manager it will display the Server category pane in the right-hand panel with only a Connect button. Click this button to connect to the App Server Configuration Database currently specified in the App Manager Options. If you want to connect to a different App Server, you can change the connection details under the App Manager Options before you click the Connect button.
Once connected to the App Server Configuration Database, the Manager will display the Server category settings in the right-hand panel and buttons giving access to the other settings categories will become available in the lower part of the left-hand panel. The tree view in the left-hand panel shows simply a root node, called Server, with a single branch, labelled Local, which represents the App Server Configuration Database you are connected to.
The Server category has three sub-categories, selected via the tabs at the bottom of the right-hand panel:
The Properties tab provides configuration options for the App Server and displays status information about the App Server.
The Properties in the Settings section allow you to specify default settings for device access, encryption and compression, audit logging and geotagging. The values you set here provide default values for apps, users and devices added to this App Server's configuration (as appropriate) which will be used where you don't configure a different setting under the individual app, user or device. Options here also cover setting the Port number to be used by the App Server and selecting an SSL Certificate to use for enhanced data encryption.
For a full list and description of all the Server Properties, see The App Manager Server Properties.
The Disconnect button allows you to disconnect from the current App Server Configuration Database.
Below the Server settings, the Status section of this tab includes the following information:
Service
This drop-down list allows you to select the App Server whose status and usage information you want to view. The list includes all App Servers using the App Server Configuration Database to which App Manager is currently connected. You can select one from the list to display its status data.
Status
The current status of the App Server, such as Connected or Disconnected.
Started
The time the service last started. If the service is not currently running a message will be displayed to inform you that the server shut down.
Last Ping
Every 10 seconds the App Server records a status update in its App Server Configuration Database. The Last Ping field tells you the last time this happened. If it has been some time since App Server last updated the database, there could be a problem with the App Server.
Total Users
Total number of users configured and maximum number of licensed users.
Total Devices
Total number of devices configured and maximum number of licensed devices.
Total Applications
Total number of apps configured and maximum number of licensed apps.
Licence
Tells you the type of Digitise Apps Licence the App Server, whose Configuration Database you are connected to, is running under.
Total Data In
Total data received by App Server and the amount of uncompressed data received.
Total Data Out
Total data sent by App Server and the amount of uncompressed data sent.
These fields can be updated by choosing the Refresh button.
In addition, the Properties tab provides the following utilities:
- Data Check – allows you to check the amount of data uploaded and downloaded between specified dates for apps, devices and users. This option also includes a Clear button allowing you to delete the current data statistics and return the data counts to zero.
- Housekeeping – allows you to specify how long audit and other log messages, stored in the App Server Configuration Database, should be retained before being automatically deleted.
- Access Check – allows you to check which apps are available to individual users and the access permissions that user has for individual apps.
- Log Viewer – allows you to read audit logs previously saved to file under one of the Audit tabs (using the Audit Save feature available under the Audit Options). You can also access this option by clicking on File, in the top left-hand corner of the window, and then choosing Log Viewer from the menu displayed.
- E-mail – allows you to set up e-mail notification whereby an e-mail will be sent to one or more specified e-mail addresses to notify the recipient(s) when messages of specified types are written to the audit log.
The Audit tab displays server-level audit messages.
The options on this tab are no longer used and can be ignored.
